A trio of African-American state senators, along with the pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, hand-delivered letters to Gov. Sonny Perdue on Monday asking him to get involved in the Genarlow Wilson case.

Wilson is the young man serving a mandatory 10-year prison sentence for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old when he was 17 in 2003, a felony at the time. The Georgia Legislature has since changed the law to make such acts between consenting teenagers a misdemeanor.

Democratic State Sens. Vincent Fort of Atlanta, Emanuel Jones of Decatur and Kasim Reed of Atlanta, and Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer are asking Perdue to call a special session of the Legislature to pass a bill sponsored by Jones that would allow judges to adjust sentences such as Wilson's in accordance with the new laws. Jones tried to pass the bill during the session, but if failed to make it out of the Senate.

Special sessions of the state Legislature are relatively rare, and it's unlikely Perdue would call one to deal with the Wilson issue. The senators say they will try to barter with Republicans who have been talking about calling the Legislature into session to deal with some budget issues. But even that possibility is remote, since Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle opposes a special session.
