America, Behold Thy Future

Constitution Burning

My heart is rather heavy this morning. I actually came across this story last night, but was so depressed by it that I just couldn't bring myself to say what I so badly wanted to say.

The parallels are disheartening in their striking similarity to what would become of this country if we continue down this road we're on. Though I've been slightly encouraged by events that are small indications that the United States is waking up and reversing course, I am by no means comforted by such minor happenings.

As I've said many times, the basic underlying principle of our founding documents is that every American should be allowed to do whatever she wants, so long as she doesn't interfere with any other American's right to do the same. We have strayed so far from that ideal!

There are literally hundreds of laws on the books in various states regulating sex. I'm not talking about laws against rape and such, as those would fall under the above mentioned principle. I'm talking about regulations on how two consenting adults may or may not, must or must not, have sex. These laws have no place in our society. They amount to an infringement on that basic underlying principle.

Think about it. Why exactly is prostitution illegal? Two consenting adults agree to exchange money for sex. Why is it of any concern to anyone else? By logical extension, it should also be illegal to marry a rich person for their money, right? Is that also not exchanging money for sex when it comes right down to it? Yet that is somehow legal because there is a magical spell said by some holy man that makes it ok.

And therein lies the crux of the matter. Religion. So called "morality laws" are forced upon the general populace because of the beliefs of a certain vocal segment of society. This seems to be contrary to the very fiber of our foundation. Indeed, such things are strictly and clearly prohibited by the very first amendment to the Constitution. In fact, the Constitution would not have been ratified at all without the promise that that very amendment would be adopted.

Yet we as a nation have strayed from the Constitution. Abandoned it for mob rule of the present majority. Ironic, considering that the purpose of setting up our republic in its particular and peculiar form was specifically to protect the minority citizenry from the majority and from the government.

Tyranny of the majority over the minority as we see it in America today is a tidal wave. It speeds inexorably in one direction, without mercy and without compassion. It is heading at breakneck speed, its deadly force concealed below the surface until without warning it rises up and smashes into the shore of Democracy, wiping it out completely, leaving only the rotting corpses of free men and women stuck in the stinking quagmire of Theocracy in its wake.

And what will this tidal wave bring with it? Death of our freedom. Destruction of our Constitution. Disease to our law. Despair to our people.

One need only look to Iran, to see our future.

I give you one symptom. One small facet. One glimpse of a microscopic close-up of our future:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that could lead to the death penalty for persons convicted of working in the production of pornographic movies.

With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that "producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered corrupter of the world and could be sentenced to punishment as corrupter of the world."

The term, "corrupter of the world" is taken from the Quran, the Muslims' holy book, and ranks among the highest on the scale of an individual's criminal offenses. Under Iran's Islamic Penal Code, it carries a death penalty.

The "main elements" referred to in the draft include producers, directors, cameramen and actors involved in making a pornographic video.

This is your country on religious law. America, behold thy future.
