I'm off to Sex 2.0!

sex2.0 logo I've been looking forward to this weekend for months. If airline glitches don't stop me in a few hours I will be in Atlanta for this weekend's Sex 2.0 conference.

Click here for the list of presenters

Sex 2.0 will focus on the intersection of social media, feminism, and sexuality. How is social media enabling people to learn, grow, and connect sexually? How is sexual expression tied to social activism? Does the concept of transparency online offer new opportunities or present new roadblocks — or both? These questions, and many more, will be addressed within a safe, welcoming, sex-positive space.

Respecting the confidentiality and protecting the identities of participants who wish to maintain a degree of anonymity will be a top priority at Sex 2.0.

When? April 12, 2008
Where? 1763~A Deviant Place of Decadence, 1763 Montreal Circle, Tucker, Ga., 30084 (directions)
How much? $10 until February 17; $40 until March 28; $50 after March 28.

REGISTRATION IS MANDATORY. We will not be taking any walk-up registrations at the door.

At Sex 2.0, everyone is a participant rather than a passive attendee. This is YOUR event!

I'll be leading a discussion exploring the ways that sex blogs, though not all written from feminist orientations, create and expand a “sex commons” — a pool of independent information about sexuality, sexual experience and sexual health — and thus constitute a feminist project undertaken in decentralized ways. I believe that sex blogs can help to destigmatize sex — an important goal in its own right — and also help to remedy several of the structural and individual problems identified by the New View Campaign as sources of women’s sexual difficulties. For example, sex blogs create a vocabulary of sexual desire, illustrate a range of sexual options, provide links to independent sources of information about sex and health and support the notion that women have a right to sexual pleasure for its own sake. In addition, because of the interaction within and between blogs, these can be sources of community building — in some cases even breaking down hierarchies like doctor/patient, teacher/student, expert/amateur — encouraging people with diverse sources of knowledge to share information and keep that information public.

I'll try to send updates as I can. I might even learn to twitter!
