I can't tell you how much it angers me that people who claim to care about the dangers faced by gender non-conforming teens contribute to that danger by insisting that the closet is the only source of safety and by spouting the kind of rhetoric that endangers the teens in the first place.
Genarlow Wilson is free today after the Georgia Supreme Court ordered yesterday ordered his release. Yet the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports on other teens still locked into sex offender registration for similar crimes.
Age of consent laws, and the punishments attached to them, are deeply problematic. Yet solutions to those problems are hard to even talk about in a society like ours that so stigmatizes sex outside of heterosexual marriage, and that has developed out-of-proportion fears of teens, of sex, and of the combination of the two.
How do we get out of this mess?
In Manchester, New Hampshire, a YMCA after-school program included a field trip to Planned Parenthood.
Of course, the anti-choice nutters are screaming, and there's an investigation by the city school board now. There's even talk of "discipline" for those responsible. Heaven forbid children should actually be exposed to **shock** OPTIONS that might permit them to stay in school. Next thing you know, those heathen schools will be indoctinating the kids with SCIENCE!!!1111!!1!
Sorry, but this really bugs me.
Anyways, you can read the full CNN story here . Here's an excerpt:
MANCHESTER, New Hampshire (AP) -- The city school board ordered an investigation into an after-school program run by the YMCA in which some middle school students were taken to visit a Planned Parenthood clinic.
New Hampshire Right to Life, an abortion opponent, is now asking for equal time with the seventh and eighth grade students, as well.
Do you remember the first time you had sex? What did you "count" as having sex? How old were you? Did you feel ready? What do you wish you'd known? What kind of sex ed had you had?
