 <title>Defense of Marriage Act</title>

 <description>&lt;p&gt;The Defense of Marriage Act was passed in 1996 and did two things:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. It defined marriage for purposes of federal law as a union of one man and one woman and;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;2. It allowed states to refuse to recognize marriages between same sex couples that are legally solemnized in other jurisdictions.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
