The Price of Pleasure

A new anti-porn documentary, The Price of Pleasure, has just been released and is being promoted via a few small showings across the country. There's been some buzz on this one for a while; Chyng Sun, the director, has written about the work in progress in left-wing outlets such as Counterpunch for several years, and I've seen allusions to it by both Robert Jensen and Gail Dines. For those of you who have either seen or heard about Noam Chomsky's recent anti-porn statements, that video apparently comes from this scene. As iamcuriousblue points out, there seems to be a huge divide in how the film is presented in its press package and the tone set by the trailer and clips on the website. The press synopsis explicitly makes the film out to be one that looks at porn through a filter of calm, unbiased rationality:

Where are the guys? Men's concerns in porn & sex work.

I recently sent an e-mail to Elizabeth about some subjects I was interested in. I must admit I'm learning all the "in's & out's" (yeah a pun is sort of intended there, however cheesy it may be! ha!) of porn, commercial sex industry. For the longest time, I've been only a voyeur. I still am, but I'm interested in the "behind the scenes" sort of stuff now. I notice the MAJORITY of "behind the scenes" conversations about porn, prostitution, sex work in general, revolve around the women... well, WHERE ARE THE GUYS???

Where are the feminist men in porn? Are there any?

What about the messages we receive about men from porn? Is it REALLY all down to "how big is your dick?" and "can you keep it hard for 2 hours? and cum on command?" How many men's REAL sexual lives are portrayed in porn? Not many I would bet. Is there porn where the guys are just good looking, having fun, not just there for their dicks & cumming capabilities?

Why are the men paid so much less than the women in porn?

Too often in discussions of sex work -- and sexuality in general -- it seems like we on the pro-sex side take on a defensive stance that inherently limits our success from the very beginning. One of the linchpins of many of our arguments is that using pornography or paying sex workers for their services doesn't hurt anyone, and is a private matter that's strictly between the people involved; so Gail Dines and Robert Jensen and Melissa Farley should just mind their own business and find some real battles to fight.  And that's true, as far as it goes.  But the flip side of that argument is that it concedes ground immediately because underneath the surface, there's the implication that these things should stay private because they are a little shady, and the best that can be said about them is that they don't hurt anyone else.  By accepting that argument as our starting point, the best that we can ever do is maintain the status quo and not slip even deeper into the morass of puritan self-loathing that already drives our national obsessions about sex.

CineKink @ Pioneer presents...

Maria Beatty:  The Elegant Spanking and The Seven Deadly Sins

A New Year's double-header of works from Maria Beatty, each offering up the director's signature "erotic noir" style and depictions of a ride between pain and pleasure at the hands of a beautiful temptress.

THE ELEGANT SPANKING

Goddess Rosemary seduces and punishes her Kitty in a play of dominance and submission, creating a fantasy world of nostalgic images that are dripping with sexual perversion.

THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

Caught in the act of coveting her mistress' position, a young maid must submit to her sadism and her lust, her perfect body made the theatre for a re-enactment of the lessons of the Seven Deadly Sins.

If you want to do something good for your fellow human beings and stock up on porn, Playtime, an adult store in Edison, NJ has a program to let you do just that.  Between now and November, Playtime is running their annual "Food For Porn" program: bring in an undented, unexpired can of food 13 ounces or larger, and the store will give you a free DVD.  You don't get to choose the title, but you can choose between gay, straight, and lesbian porn:

A paean to the New York sexual underground, circa 1970-85, this engrossing documentary brings together four of its most colorful protagonists. Guide to the action is Michele Capozzi, urban explorer and self-titled pornologist, with an up-close introduction to Neville Chambers, founder of the infamous porn-producing Fuck Factory; Lenny Waller, long-time front-man of the meat-packing district's now-defunct Hellfire Club and renowned pornstar/mistress/shaman, Porsche Lynn - for a look back in time, an assessment of where we are today...and one very wild farewell party. “No Jewish whores” at the NY Times online, but what about in print? (Debbie Nathan)

Submitted by Elizabeth on 6 September 2007 - 5:08pm.

Debbie Nathan, super-smart journalist documenting issues of gender and international politics, notes an interesting discrepency between the print and Internet versions of a New York Times story about a collection of porn novels based on the notion that there was a secret sex slave block in the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Nathan writes that:

the Times quotes Israeli holocaust researcher Na’ama Shik saying, K. Tzetnik’s tales of sex slavery are myth. “It was fiction. Block 24 didn’t exist,” she comments.

Actually, Shik says a little more in the version that appears online today at the Times web site. “There were no Jewish whores in Auschwitz,” she adds there (click to see the onine article).
